The January Challenge
You may (or may not) have heard of the January Challenge. I have run it for several years now on behalf of GNAS/ Archery GB. After some confusion (because some people had never heard of it!) I have been asked to run it once again in January 2012.
It is very simple. Archers should submit their best score for an indoor Portsmouth round shot in January 2012, and I then sift them into a ranked table. There are various categories, covering sex, bow style and archers’ experience. All the various combinations are detailed in the attached flier. There are no physical trophies, just the glory of knowing where in the list each archer came. I will accept scores by post or email, and spread sheets with all the scores from one club are particularly welcome. They should be submitted to me by the end of the first weekend in February, and I send the results to the AGB website as soon as I can
So far so simple. However, as the decision to run the competition has been delayed to the last minute, no notice was placed in Archery UK. Could I ask you all, therefore, to forward this email on to the counties in your region (and ask them to forward it on to their clubs). With the wonders of modern communications, this should reach most potential competitors with plenty of time to take part.
Thank you for your assistance – and Merry Christmas
Nick Beeson

Alan Staples (1953 - 2011)
Archery was well represented at the service to celebrate Alan's life held in Lincoln on Wednesday 14th September.
Archers from Lincoln, Stafford and members of the EMAS committee were all in attendance at the bright, if somewhat over warm, service. It was standing room only as friends & colleagues representing all aspects of Alan's varied work & interests joined with his family for a rousing rendition of Jerusalem. Ann Marie thanked everyone for their kind messages of sympathy and support following Alan's sudden death.
In accordance with the families wishes, in lieu of flowers, EMAS has made a donation to the British Heart Foundation. The Leukaemia & Lymphoma society will also benefit from the collection made at the service.

- Shooting of a single black arrow;

- A round of applause to commemorate his contributions to archery.
Lincoln Archers will also be wearing black armbands.
Please also be aware that the A46 is closed from 8pm on Saturday 3rd September until 6am on Sunday 4th September 2011 at RAF Syerston – we do not believe that this will affect anyone unless they are travelling really early!

Burton Joyce Archers hold first record status shoot for twelve years
On Sunday 24th July Burton Joyce Archers held the East Midlands Archery Society Junior Intercounties team Tournament which saw teams of junior archers from Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestshire and Rutland, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire all competing for the Sydney Bond and Bingham Ceramics trophies.
Each County sent a team of eight recurve and four compound junior archers to challenge for the EMAS intercounties junior awards at an event held with the kind permission of Burton Joyce Parish Council at the Poplars Sports ground complex, a facility that is currently under threat from a planning application by Severn Trent Water to erect a massive wind turbines complex which if granted will stop any future archery events from taking place at this venue.
Leicestershire and Rutland won both the Compound team trophy, and the recurve team trophy so a clean sweep for their highly skilled archers.
Individual awards were won by Nottinghamshire's Holly Smith (Highest scoring compound lady), and Lizzie Warner from Leicestershire and Rutland (highest scoring recurve lady)
Gentlemen taking honors were Josh Hall (highest scoring compound gents) and David Forster (highest scoring recurve gents) both from Northamptonshire.
Well done to everyone who took part, and thank you to all our County and club helpers who assisted in running this annual event in the EMAS calender.
Burton Joyce Archers hope to continue to hold record status events at their shooting ground but this may dependant on ongoing planning applications.
Junior Euronations Archery Tournament 23rd 24th July 2011
In keeping with archery traditions of Nottinghamshire a Home Nations competition event was held in the County this weekend.
Sherwood Archers had been chosen by The English Archery Federation to host the 2011 Junior Euronations Tournament, an event held in England on a five yearly cycle between the GB Home Nations. This year we had competitors from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Sherwood Archers’ excellent history and reputation for managing archery tournaments made them EAF’s first choice to host this prestigious event and every aspect of the two days reinforced how right that decision had been. Team accommodation was arranged at Brackenhurst College.
The tournament was run over two days – The young people shot as teams representing their country on Saturday and as individuals on the Sunday.
The weather was fine, if some what blustery at times and all the competitors enjoyed a full two days of challenging and friendly competition. The England archers did very well on both days taking both the team trophies. On the Sunday they again acquitted themselves very well taking four first places out of the six that were awarded – and this despite difficult times for their team manager Adam Guest (from Notts!) and mascot George: the following is taken from the report back to the EAF committee by the Chair of EAF, and joint Lady Paramount of the competition - Karen McMillan, the other Lord Patron being Les Smeeton.
“Good Evening all, I have just arrived back after a brilliant weekend at the Junior Euronations, England Juniors were fantastic, well behaved I never heard any complaints about any of them, just brilliant, even after severe provocation (The England Mascot George the monkey was kidnapped by the Irish Team and held for ransom they held their cool, then slaughtered them on the field, I understand the Irish team also kidnapped Adam Guest Saturday night but sent him back when they realised they may have been stuck with him (only joking Adam, you did a fabulous job,)”
Attending officials from English Archery Federation were Karen McMillan (Chair) and Les Smeeton the local (East Midlands) EAF representative.
25th July
GNAS / ArcheryGB annual affiliation returns are now in circulation.
Any club officer in any doubt about the correct procedure and payments (Note: not as per the photocopying instruction from GNAS) should contact their county officials to verify the situation. Look also on your county website for further information.

Hollie Smith (10) and Rebekah Lowe (9) took part in the Junior Fita Star and the Junior National Open Championships at Lilleshall on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd July 2011. It was a lovely weekend, with unbroken sunshine throughout and soaring temperatures. With 70 targets and over 300 junior archers competing over the course of the weekend it was an impressive sight if not a little overwhelming for two young girls who had never taken part in an Outdoor National competition before.
Shooting the Metric V round on the Saturday, Hollie shooting a Compound Bow broke the existing national record for the 15m distance with a score of 337. She also broke the existing EMAS and Nottinghamshire County Record for the round of 1291 by shooting an impressive 1345 and was awarded the Willson Trophy.
Rebekah shooting Barebow broke the existing National Records for the 20m, 15m and 10m distances and went on to further increase the National Record for the round she set last weekend at the Emas Double Fita Star, by 35 points, setting a new National, EMAS and Nottinghamshire County record for Barebow of 1053 and was awarded the Barebow Trophy.
On the Sunday, Hollie was successful in shooting a new EMAS and Nottinghamshire County Record of 1250, for the Bristol V round, giving her second place to
Lucy Mason who managed to put in a perfect score of 1296.
Rebekah found the conditions on the Sunday challenging after her Saturday performance, but managed to complete the competition, achieving a silver medal place.
Not a bad weekend for them both: 1st place, 2nd place, National, Regional and County records and in addition a purple Rose for Hollie and a purple Cross for Bekky.
Congratulations to both girls.

EMAS Juniors v NCAS Juniors at the Weatherby FITA
11 of EMAS Youth Squad represented the Region on the 4th June at Yorkshire Archery Association FITA Star at Wetherby.
The day started out warm and sunny with no wind promising to be a perfect days shooting but by the time official practice had ended a brisk wind had wipped up bringing in cloud from the North. By the end of the day every glimmer of sun had been extinguished and cold wether gear was in order. Despite the conditions there was some strong shooting with some personal best scores. As usual the team were a credit to their parents and Region.
EMAS won the Compound mixed team 5125 to NCAS 4756
EMAS won the Recurve mixed team 4739 to NCAS 4314
I would like to thank the YAA for their hospitality and the team from Northern Counties for giving us such a sporting and good natured event and look forward to 2012.
